FM UITTI / STEPHEN VITIELLO
" s/t " 3"CD
I love the little full-color 3" cd jacket! no title or words, both sides covered with a distant desert-scape, a single tiny camel in the distant view, its like this miniature artifact. The music is a combination of avant-garde (clarinet player? I forget) Uitti music with Stephen Vitiello's discordant ambient work twenty some odd minutes of course. Very nice, from Lowlands Belgium. $7

" Unclean Spirit "CD
Lock the doors, keep out the whistling wind, it bares a plague of memory. Umbra is like an unclean spirit for sure, haunting the empty streets at midnite, moaning in the alleyways and empty catacombs beneath busy cities. This is like a documentary of ghost-voices and ghost stories. Need something to fill that void Yen Pox and Voice of Eye have left? Here it is; but darker and twice as evil. Utterly black ambient soundscapes with that satisfying structure and change: Valley of Dry Bones, Spiders Under The Skin and several other appropriately named tracks. A collaborative project from Scott E Candey and Stephen Petrus. Great stuff. $13

" Graves At Andras "CD
Ever seen those new age cds that sell at Yoga studios, massage therapists office's and health food stores? Well, if there were Satanic versions of those institutions in our world, Valefor cds would be in a little rack on the front counter. These guys take their religion seriously, and take it out in their music. What you get is dark, industrial ambient in the vien of Die Wappen Des Thodt, Runes Order, Yen Pox and Arcane Art. Female vocals here and there are a nice touch, makes it a bit better than the usual gravel-voiced grumbles you get in a lot of this ritualist-ambient. $12

VALEFOR
" Invocation of Forneus "CD
Its difficult to make a record of industrial stand out these days, but this Valefor disc reminded me of the first time I heard Mental Destructions 'When Madness Strikes', a very different use of harsh background scree and noise, combined with non-beat pounding and slave-drums, fast but not even close to being danceable. Intense and intelligent but still effective in a carnal, physical way. This is almost Black Metal combined with something like Merzbow and early Nocturnal Emissions. Stays very clear of all industrial or black-metal cliches. Great medieval/alchemical/satanic artwork thats quite beautiful in an evil way. $13

kn play audio track VEDISNI
" Architects And Murderers "CD
The artwork always affects me I think, and Vedisni makes a sound something LIKE power electronics, but theres far too much spacious atmosphere and intelligence going on here to be just another vieled manifesto for obscure social occultism. But perhaps I am swayed by the iamges: black and white, misty collage of foreboding symbols, rusty pipes, ghosts, tools, turn of the century etchings of people and inventions, gnarled trees, a small girl, bones, greek revival architecture, the words "Maturity" and "Liberty" emblazon two panels. Almost masonic…and what is the connection between Architects and murderers? But the music is what grabs you, its deep, darkambient and power-electronics without a hint of pretentiousness. There are other people better able to describe this non-genre, but I enjoyed vedisini myself. For the mystery and the music. $13

" Collection III:The Black Summer "CD
You may remember this project from a split cd with AS ALL DIE. This is exquisite Lustmord-style black ambient. Increasing, developing, awe-inspiring cavernous reverbrations with no vocals, no cheesy effects, just sublime, grey, drifting phantasms. Dark drones, pressure drops, geometrically increasing sound structures with a hint of melancholy. The best I've heard in this style since Ruhr Hunter 'Ritual Before The Hunt..'. In fact, this would fit on that label, with Gruntsplatter, Slowvent and Ruhr. Excellent material created over the Summer of 1999 by D. Marvin, the mind behind Veinke. We will be playing this to death here in coming weeks I'm sure. $13

DARRIN VERHAGEN
'Soft Ash' CD
Verhagen, the founder of Shinjuku Thief turns his efforts to interpreting atmospheric disasters into dystopic, dark-ambient clouds of lethal drift. Each piece highlights a particular distater in human history involving airborne poison, clouds of gas, smoke, poison. The tracks are spooky, orchestral at times, but always opressive. Feels like running through black, stinging fog, hoping you dont trip over any bodies. Each track is also given a chemical notation, to represent the scientific designation of the substance that made each disaster so deadly. $13

" Hydra "CDEP
The cover of this slimline cd case has an opaque, dark blue field, ripples inside it as if it were water, and unless you look closely, you'll miss the body that floats beneath the surface, naked, face-down, so obviously dead but far away. So it is with this collection of tracks, grand and captivating surface movements make this easy to hear, but the dystopic, satisfying rhythm hangs beneath, thundering silently like titan heartbeats in the cold deep. Check out this particular power on track two, 'Carnage', a devastating slice of anti-dance choreography. Hydra brings together five disparate, superficially discordant pieces into one thirty-seven minute disc. The disc contains a deft and haunting remix of pieces from Soft Ash, also has samples from the immortal Alan Lamb 'Night Passage' disc. But throughout it all is the charming weirdness I've described before in a disc that's really too long and concise to be an EP, but too short for the 70+ minute scope of a "full-length". $7

kn play audio track VERTONEN
" Trigger Field"CDR
Experimental musics poet/destroyer, Blake Edwards uses Trigger Field to crumble noise into vast pits of guarded violence. Under it all is the use of words, the metronomic clockwork, the stuttered, hissing frequency of normal sounds that have been forced through the grinder until they come out as woven shreds of noisy ambient. Several of the longer pieces border on noisier zones, but theres still always this thought here that Edwards has still carefully constructed each piece. And there is the sense of drift, the hypnotic motion of the sounds, billowing into the tossing surf. No machinew as left running to make these sunds. theres a palcement here. And the eight-page booklet has great writings, cut-up poems and surrealist text. $12

VERTONEN 'Lock up' 7"
Blessed chunk of wax, and an artifact. The Lock Up ep by Vertonen is limited to 300 numbered copies, each with a small book of pictures, poetry, strange photocopies images and ads. Truly a collectible artifact, One side of the record is lockgrooves, the other a pure piece of tonal organic ambience. $5

kn VIRIDIAN SUN
" Perihelion "CD
Viridian Sun is David Tollefson and Michael Griffin. If you arent familiar with either, they have their own discs and their own reviews in this catalog as well. This collision is superb. It starts out with 'Epihelion', which has a slow, sad, vibrant tone undr a revolving, off-kilter filtered spaceship noise. The serious notes keep this from being silly, making it instead sadly whimsical and nostalgic, as if one is watching creature feature alien movies from ones childhood on a darkened set with couch and television sitting on a hill in a vast brown wasteland. Each piece almost seems to live inside of this template:, two distinct pitches and revolutions, counterbalancing and destroying each other in a doomed soul dance that's beauty to watch. $13
